About St John the Divine, Merton
- 🏰 St John the Divine, Merton is a lovely church with a TARDIS-like atmosphere. It may appear dark and sombre on the outside, but inside it is light, open, and welcoming.
- ⛪️ This church was built in memory of Admiral Nelson on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1905. It showcases an impressive gothic style architecture designed by C H Gage, who was associated with the Art & Crafts movement.
- ⚓️ A unique feature of this church is that it has a part of HMS Victory at its back which used to be on the High Altar. The stained glass window in the Lady Chapel has been taken from an Edward Byrne-Jones design from All Hallows’ in Liverpool.
- 🔔 The tower also houses a peal of 10 bells, with 7 cast at Whitechapel Bell Foundry from 2014-2017 before its permanent closure.
- 🙏 The congregation of St John the Divine is described as friendly and welcoming. There’s also a youth club now available to join.
