Mildreds in Covent Garden is a paradise for vegetarians and vegans. We yearn for something different from mundane vegetable lasagne and risotto dishes. Finally, we are thrilled to take our non-veggie friends and family to a place serving delicious, flavourful meals.
The 100% plant-based restaurant creates dishes that showcase vegetables without sacrificing flavour. Plates of food that persuade meat eaters that vegan food does not have to be dull.
Mildreds has stood the test of time since 1988. They no longer stand out as whacky, appealing to pasty white tree huggers. They are ahead of the game, attracting those concerned with animal welfare and others troubled by the environment, their health, waistline and wallets. Others are intrigued to discover if vegan food does not have to be bland.
Whatever the reason, Mildreds is enticing a diverse clientele at its six locations. Ironically, Mildreds Covent Garden took over the former Angus Steakhouse.
Only a few minutes walk from Leicester Square. The elegant panelling and furnishings are in pale greens and pink, and plenty of green foliage makes for a natural appearance, providing a freshness as you enter.
The Food
Mildreds serve an internationally inspired cuisine using seasonal ingredients. They offer a selection of menus for breakfast, brunch, all day, kids, and onion and garlic free.
A few options from the All-Day menu, which they serve daily from 11.00 am includes,

Mildred’s homemade Kimchi is a hit. It can be bought as a side for £5.00 or enjoyed in Bokkeumbap, where the kimchi is spicy and tasty. The dish is kimchi fried rice, with clean bean salt and pepper tofu, crispy shallot and nori, at £15.50.
Kiri Hodi, Sri Lankan coconut curry, is a success, sweet potato green beans sabzi with pineapple achar (a pickle), cashew coconut sev (crunchy noodles), pea basmati, and mint mango chutney for £17.00.
Mildreds provide several dessert options, and if you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, you might crave a panna cotta or crème brûlèe. Mildreds serves both.
Jaggery panna cotta with black pepper, rum, and pineapple for £8.50.
Crème brûlèe with a raspberry coulis for £8.00.

A selection of teas, coffees, fresh juices, and non-alcoholic cocktails are available, like a Coco Key Lime, coconut, lime, and agave, for £9.00.
Final Thoughts
Mildreds, with its 100% plant-based menu, is triumphantly succeeding with its original aim. To serve quality, exciting, and globally inspired cuisine at affordable prices. What was a small niche is now highly fashionable. They have won over sceptics, with some reviewing their food as ‘annoyingly good’.
