About Church Road Cemetery

  • 🌳 Church Road Cemetery is a very old burial ground with deep historical roots. Some believe it predates the Norman Invasion, and there are even Saxon burials nearby.
  • 🏰 The current church was rebuilt 200 years ago, replacing a structure from the 14th century. It holds significant historical value.
  • 🗺️ The parish registers dating back to 1563 can be found at the Surrey History Centre in Woking. It’s impressive that such records have been preserved.
  • 💀 The Ancient Churchyard on the north side of the church houses the earliest graves, as marked on Merton council’s map available for download.
  • ⚰️ In 1855, an expansion was made at Church Road Cemetery, and it later grew to its current size. Burial applications ceased in 1929 when London Road Cemetery opened, although pre-purchased plots continued to be used after this year.
  • ☠️ Maintained by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, there are 52 World War I graves and one World War II grave here.
