Wow! Jin Kichi is incredible, the food is absolutely amazing and the staff are lovely. Really really great quality sashimi and the grilled mackerel is astonishingly delicious.
There isn’t loads of space so it can be a little cramped (especially if you’re at the ‘bar’ area) but the food is so good you’ll forget about that.
It is a tad on the pricey side but honestly I think the quality of the food and the prices are mostly pretty even.
I would recommend making a reservation but they were doing their best to seat those without.
Can’t wait to go back~

First time coming back after the refurb. The grill bar is the same but they have extended their shop so that the sushi bar is also on ground level! We have always been a fan of their authentic Japanese grilling. All the skewers are amazing, you will not disappoint! Our favourite is ox tongue, perfectly seasoned and are of the right thickness!! I always order umeshu cocktail which is not on the menu, but taste so good! Would recommend!

Authentic izakaya at the heart of Hampstead with a delicious yakitory and sushi menu.
I came on Tuesday eve when all of the seafood is extremely fresh and also a bit later on so I was seated immediately without having a booking. There was no wait for the food (I guess the other reviewers mentioning it were extremely unlucky)
I ordered 3 different yakitory, the chicken liver yakitory is to die for and my fave. Absolutely melting in the mouth and packed full of flavours.
The sashimi was as fresh as it could be, hence delicious! The tamagoyaki nigiri was extremely delicate and literally caressing my palate
Overall a fantastic and authentic experience. I’ll be back to try the rest of the menu

Great yakitori experience.
We made the reservation online 2 weeks before, had it confirmed and came for dinner where we sat at the counter being able to observe the magic. We primarily ordered grilled dishes – yakitori – and it was amazing. On top of that, the miso soup was brilliant!
So, all in all, we will definitely be coming back for more!

We were here on 1 Feb 2022, and my regret was that I should have checked the photos in more detail instead of relying on others’ 5 star ratings. The skewers were obviously burnt in most recent photos, and for our dinner here almost all of the skewers ordered were burnt.
Have a closer look at my photos and you’ll see. The tsukune (chicken meatballs) don’t seem burnt, but that’s because the chef had the genius of flipping the burnt side down (obviously knowing that burnt isn’t good), while not giving the usual egg yolk / tare sauce, yet the tsukune wasn’t brushed / dipped enough when it was cooked so the flavour was only superficial and somewhat bland.
The ox tongues were burnt, tough and bitter. The chicken wings, a usually very lenient part of the chicken that stays moist unless you seriously screw it up, was so burnt that the tip of the bones turned to ash (pardon the bones photo). The tips were essentially cremated and turned into ash.
The chicken thigh skewers used a rather non traditional onion instead of leeks, which naturally tasted weird. But “innovation” aside, the meat was again so burnt that it tasted bitter.
As the photo of the grill shows, some of the skewers on there were already burnt, and the chef still kept them there without any care. One main issue I saw is that when there is flame flare up due to oil dripping down, the chef just let the skewers sit IN the flame. That is how these skewers got so burnt that they may well be carcinogenic. The meal was disastrously bad since all but a couple of the skewers we ordered were not burnt. This was probably the first time we chose not to order a second round of skewers at a yakitori, despite having half a bottle of sake left.
The question, then, is that whether this is “traditional”. Definitely not. None of the Japanese skewer restaurants I’ve been to in Japan, Hong Kong or elsewhere serves their skewers bitter. Yes, the environment reminded me of some yakitori shops, especially how crammed everything were, but that alone means nothing.
Most interestingly, if we go back a bit further in the Google map photos, the skewers actually looked more decent a few years ago. It is unfortunate that standards have slipped so significantly.
I seriously hope that this one star review will encourage the owner and chef of Jin Kichi to up their act and serve proper skewers. If you can’t manage grilling for so many diners at the same time, limit capacity. Please don’t scam the “gaijins” who don’t know their yakitori into thinking that burnt skewers are ok. Because I’m sure you know that burnt skewers are never ok, and shouldn’t be served.

A not-so-hidden gem at Hampstead village, a homey izakaya that provides the authentic Japanese culinary experience. The grilled mackerel was truly amazing, it is a dish that I don’t often find in London. The fish was fresh, juicy and cooked to perfection. The sake set was sold out when we visited. This restaurant is definitely a nice place for a light meal/drink, it is more on the pricier side but still worth a try.

One of the best Japanese restaurants at a reasonable price. Very cosy and felt like we were in Japan.
Wagu steak was cooked to perfection. Highlight was the yakitori of gizzard and ox tongue. Highly recommend!!

Place came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Beautifully grilled fish and vegetables. Also enjoyed the flight of sakis, which allowed me to sample some ones I’d not try otherwise.

What a gem of a restaurant- authentic, cosy, welcoming, and of course with a fabulous choice of yummy Japanese food.
Without a doubt you cannot eat here without trying some of the grilled skewers – just get your order in fast because they use fresh but limited stock which goes quickly (by the time we left the duck, salmon, chilli, onion and the gizzard skewers were all sold out).
All our skewers were cooked to perfection over a flaming charcoal grill which gives a great taste and visual too (highly recommended getting a bar seat like I did if you are ordering yakitori). Our favourite of the night was the lamb skewer, but I would also recommend the chicken wings, the duck + spring onion, and the quail eggs.
We also tried the mix tempura and potato croquettes which were just as amazing as the skewers.
Finally, I can’t comment on this restaurant without mentioning the lovely staff. We were served by Mana (I think I heard you correctly ), who was very sweet and attentive, and even put up with us when we spilt some water on the bar.
Overall 10/10. I will be back very soon, this has got to be one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London.

My hubby and kids went there first to get a table at 7:30pm and so lucky we made booking in advance for 7:45pm as the place was so busy… yes so busy on a Tuesday night!
We ordered nothing raw as we have small kids and the food bill came to £66.20 and drinks (include few sakes) around £40…
First the tall seems to be Japanese waitress wasn’t so friendly and when we order we show her the menu and say we want this one please, she replied, I cannot see read it… okay I tried my best to pronounce… yes the place is a dimmed…
Then I said I like to order black cod please, she said no, no black cod. So I said ohhh I came all the way from Leicester for the black cod with a big smile on my face… said it lightly and they waitress no respond at all she was not friend, and very cold… not sure it it’s was busy or she might be stressed out
Food wise, my fav was the cold soba and second was the fried udon…
Appetiser we had fish sea beam which was weird, no taste and chewy and the tofu absolutely no taste, can taste few ginger and spring onions…
Grilled skewers set A… taste so so… some chicken very soft and juicy and raw… I would say medium… Some chicken super tough and dried…
Ordered the ox tongue x2, it was okay… but my hubby said not worth it…
over all the grilled skewers was a bit too burnt… little charcoal okay but too much you can only taste the bitter charcoal…
Butter mushroom I wish they didn’t squeeze any lemon in as it ruins it for me… it was good until you taste the acidic lemon int he butter mushroom…
Coke in big pint glass and apple juice in half pint… sakes was nice the man working at the till for our bill was a lot friendly and more smile, I think he is Japanese too. They don’t have normal bill, it was a bunch of hand written ones and I had no idea what they are
Overall… it was okay experience, better than the stick and sushi that we had in Cambridge with similar price… we may not return anytime soon…
